Signs that can't wait until morning

Most electrical fires start small and give warning. These are the warnings. If you see any of them, cut power at the breaker if you can do so safely, and call us.

Burning or "fishy" smell

Overheating wire insulation smells like burning plastic or fish. It means a connection is arcing or a wire is overloaded — behind a wall, in an outlet, or inside the panel.

Sparking, smoke, or scorch marks

An outlet or switch that sparks when used, discoloration around a cover plate, or a plug that comes out hot. Stop using the circuit and call.

Buzzing, hot, or humming panel

A breaker panel should be silent and cool. Buzzing or warmth points to a loose or failing breaker or bus connection — a leading cause of panel fires.

Main breaker won't reset

If the main trips repeatedly or won't hold, there's a fault somewhere on the system. Forcing it is how equipment gets destroyed. Leave it off and call.

Partial power loss or dimming

Lights bright in one room and dim in another, or half the house dead, often means a lost neutral or a failing service connection — hard on electronics and dangerous.

Water, storm, or snow damage

A leak into a fixture or panel, a service mast bent by snow load or a fallen limb, or a meter base pulled loose. Stay clear and call us and your utility.

While you wait for us

  1. Flames or heavy smoke? Get everyone out and call 911 first. Never put water on an electrical fire.
  2. Kill the circuit. If it's safe to reach the panel, switch off the affected breaker — or the main if you're not sure which one.
  3. Unplug what you can on the affected circuit, especially anything with a motor or heating element.
  4. Don't touch anything that's wet, warm, or making noise. Keep kids and pets away from the area.

When it's the utility, not the house

  1. Whole street dark? Report the outage to Pacific Power (most of Bend) or Central Electric Cooperative (many outlying areas) before calling an electrician.
  2. Downed or sagging lines — stay at least 30 feet back, keep others away, and call 911 and the utility. Never approach a line, even if it looks dead.
  3. Everyone else came back on but you didn't? That's usually on your side of the meter. Call us.
  4. Tired of outages? Ask about a standby generator or interlock once things are stable.
Emergency Electrical Repairs

Fixed right the first time, not patched until Monday

An emergency call from Manzanita Electric isn't a "make it safe and come back later" visit unless that's genuinely the right move. Our trucks carry the breakers, GFCI and AFCI devices, receptacles, wire, and connectors to complete most residential repairs on the spot — including the odd-sized breakers in older Bend panels.

We handle failed main breakers and bus damage, burnt receptacles and switches, tripping arc-fault and ground-fault circuits, lost neutrals, storm-damaged service masts and meter bases (with Pacific Power coordination for the reconnect), flooded fixtures, and well pump and heat circuits that quit in the middle of a cold snap. If the problem turns out to be a panel at the end of its life, we'll tell you straight and quote a panel upgrade — no pressure, no scare tactics.

We cover Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Tumalo, Sunriver, La Pine, and the rest of Central Oregon. Vacation rental owners and property managers: we know a dead kitchen circuit between guests is an emergency too.

How an Emergency Call Works

From your call to power restored

1

You call, we answer

Tell us what you're seeing, smelling, or hearing. We'll walk you through making the situation safe right then if needed.

2

Straight pricing

You get the service call rate — and the after-hours charge if it applies — before a truck moves. No surprise on the invoice.

3

Diagnose & quote

We find the actual fault, not just the symptom, explain it in plain English, and quote the repair before we start.

4

Repair & verify

Most repairs are finished the same visit. We test the circuit under load, check the rest of the panel, and leave it clean.

Why Call Manzanita Electric

Local, licensed, and honest at 2am

✓

A person, not a dispatcher

Big franchise numbers route to an out-of-state call center. Ours rings an electrician who can actually tell you whether to shut off the main.

✓

Minutes away, not hours

We live and work in Bend. In-town emergencies are usually reached within the hour; Redmond, Sisters, Tumalo, and Sunriver aren't far behind.

✓

Licensed & insured for emergency work

CCB# 259617, ECL# C2160, bonded and insured. Emergency repairs are still permitted and inspected where the code requires it.

✓

No fear-based upselling

We fix what's broken. If your panel really is a fire risk we'll show you why — and if it isn't, we'll tell you that too.

✓

Trucks stocked for older homes

Bend's Westside, Awbrey Butte, and older Redmond and Sisters homes have panels the big-box stores don't carry parts for. We do.

✓

Follow-through

If the emergency exposes a bigger issue — a tired panel, an overloaded service, no backup power — we'll schedule the permanent fix on your timeline.

Emergency FAQ

Questions people ask when the lights go out

Anything that could start a fire or leaves you unsafe: a burning or fishy smell from an outlet, switch, or panel; sparking, smoke, or scorch marks; a hot or buzzing breaker panel; a tripped main that won't reset; sudden partial power loss; water in contact with wiring; or storm damage to the service mast or meter. If you see flames, call 911 first, then call us at 541-410-0444.
Yes. 541-410-0444 rings a real Manzanita Electric electrician — nights, weekends, and holidays. If you reach voicemail we're on another emergency; leave your name, address, and what's happening and we'll call back as quickly as we can.
We're based in Bend, so most in-town emergency calls are reached within the hour depending on time of day and road conditions. Redmond, Tumalo, Sisters, and Sunriver are typically under an hour as well. We'll give you an honest arrival window when you call.
Our standard service call and diagnostic is $129 during business hours. After-hours and holiday emergency calls carry an additional charge, which we tell you up front on the phone before we dispatch — never a surprise on the invoice. Repairs are quoted before work begins. See our full pricing.
It can be. Partial power loss often means a lost neutral, a failing main breaker, or a loose connection at the panel or meter — all of which can overheat and damage electronics. If lights are dimming and brightening, outlets are dead in one area, or anything feels warm, call us right away.
If your neighbors are out too, report it to your utility first — Pacific Power in most of Bend, or Central Electric Cooperative in many outlying areas. If your home is the only one dark, or power came back for everyone else but not you, that's usually on your side of the meter and we can help. Downed lines: stay far away and call the utility and 911.
Yes. We work with Bend and Sunriver short-term rental owners, property managers, and local businesses that can't afford downtime — dead outlets between guest turnovers, tripped kitchen circuits, hot tub GFCI trips, sign and parking lot lighting, and after-hours commercial repairs.
