Hot Tub Wiring in Bend & Central Oregon

Snow on the deck, steam off the water, stars over the Cascades — a hot tub is about the most Bend thing you can own. Getting it powered safely is the part we do: a dedicated 240V circuit, a GFCI disconnect in the right spot, proper bonding, and the permit and inspection handled. Starting at $2,500, usually scheduled the same week your spa is delivered.

Spa Electrical Done Right

Water, 240 volts, and a Central Oregon winter — the details matter

A hot tub combines the highest-risk things in residential electrical: high current, standing water, bare feet, and an outdoor enclosure that sees 90°F summers and single-digit January nights. The code around spas exists for good reason, and it's specific — GFCI protection on the whole circuit, a disconnect you can see from the tub but can't reach from the water, equipotential bonding of every metal part within reach, burial depths and conduit that survive frost, and a breaker sized to the spa's nameplate rather than to whatever was handy.

We wire spas of every brand — Hot Spring, Jacuzzi, Bullfrog, Caldera, Sundance, Marquis, Cal Spas, swim spas, and the 120V plug-and-play models — for new installs, replacements, and moves. Before we run a wire, we check your panel: a 50-amp spa circuit is a big load, and many 100-amp panels in older Bend homes need a subpanel or an upgrade to take it safely, especially alongside an EV charger or heat pump.

Serving Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, Tumalo, La Pine, and all of Central Oregon — including the vacation rentals where a working spa is the amenity guests book for.

What's Included

A complete, code-compliant spa circuit

Every hot tub installation we do covers the full list below. If a spa dealer or handyman quote is dramatically cheaper, ask which of these it leaves out.

  • Panel load calculation & breaker sizing to nameplate
  • Dedicated 240V circuit (or 120V for plug-and-play)
  • Weatherproof GFCI disconnect within sight, 5–50 ft away
  • Copper conductors sized for run length & voltage drop
  • Trenching & frost-rated conduit to patio or deck
  • Equipotential bonding of spa, rails, and nearby metal
  • Final hookup at the spa control pack
  • City of Bend / Deschutes County permit & inspection
Which Circuit Does Your Spa Need?

Hot tub electrical requirements at a glance

Your spa's spec plate is the final word. This is what we see most often in Central Oregon.

Spa typeCircuitWhat that means for the install
120V plug-and-play Dedicated 15A or 20A GFCI Slower to heat, but simple. Needs its own circuit — never shared with the patio outlets or fridge.
Standard 240V spa (most 6–7 person tubs) Dedicated 50A, GFCI-protected The typical Bend install. 6 AWG copper on most runs, GFCI disconnect on the wall, hardwired at the spa.
Large or dual-pump spa Dedicated 60A, GFCI-protected Heavier wire and a bigger disconnect. More likely to push an older panel past its limit.
Swim spa One or two 50–60A circuits Some models want two separate feeds. Almost always a panel capacity conversation first.
Spa on a detached patio or outbuilding As above, plus trenching Buried conduit at frost-safe depth, sometimes a small subpanel at the far end.

Distance matters: long runs from the panel require larger wire to keep voltage drop in check, which is one of the main things that moves a quote above the starting price.

Starting at$2,500

That's a standard 240V hot tub circuit with GFCI disconnect, bonding, permit, and inspection — the whole job, not a base price with add-ons hiding behind it. The things that can move the number:

  • Long wire runs or trenching to a detached patio
  • Subpanel to create capacity (from $1,700)
  • 200-amp panel upgrade if needed (from $4,500)
  • Outdoor lighting, outlets, or a timer while we're there
How It Works

From spa purchase to first soak

1

Send us the details

Spa make and model (or the spec sheet), where it's going, and a couple of photos of your panel. That's usually enough for a firm quote.

2

Permit & scheduling

We pull the City of Bend or Deschutes County permit and book the install around your delivery date — before or the same day.

3

Install day

Circuit from the panel, conduit or trench, GFCI disconnect mounted, bonding run, and final hookup at the spa once it's set.

4

Test & inspect

We test the GFCI, verify the spa powers up and heats, and meet the inspector. Then it's just a matter of waiting for the water to warm up.

Why Bend Spa Owners Call Us

Licensed, local, and not our first hot tub

✓

We work with your dealer's schedule

Spa deliveries are booked weeks out. We coordinate so the circuit is ready when the crane or dolly shows up — no spa sitting cold for a week.

✓

Panel honesty

If your panel can take a 50-amp spa, we say so. If it can't, we show you the load calc and give you the subpanel and upgrade options with real prices.

✓

Built for high-desert winters

Frost-depth conduit, weatherproof enclosures rated for snow and UV, and disconnect placement you can reach when the deck is iced over.

✓

Permits handled, every time

Spa circuits are permit-required work in Bend and Deschutes County. We pull it, we meet the inspector, and you get the paperwork for your records and insurance.

✓

Vacation rental friendly

Sunriver, Bend, and Sisters short-term rentals: we work between bookings and can add guest-proof timers and lighting on the same visit.

✓

Service after the install

GFCI tripping in January? Heater not kicking on? We troubleshoot spa circuits on same-day and emergency calls so the tub doesn't freeze.

Hot Tub Wiring FAQ

What Central Oregon spa owners ask us

Hot tub wiring starts at $2,500 for a standard installation: a dedicated 240V circuit from your panel, a weatherproof GFCI disconnect near the spa, bonding, the permit, and the inspection. Longer runs, trenching to a detached patio, or a panel that needs a subpanel or upgrade add to that. We quote the exact number after seeing your panel and the spa location — photos through the form above are often enough to get started.
Most full-size 240V spas call for a dedicated 50-amp circuit; some larger or dual-pump models specify 60 amps, and a few smaller ones 40 amps. Plug-and-play tubs run on a dedicated 120V 15- or 20-amp GFCI circuit. We size the breaker, wire gauge, and disconnect to the manufacturer's spec plate on your specific spa, not a generic rule of thumb.
Only a 120V plug-and-play spa, and only into a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit — sharing it with anything else trips breakers and is a fire risk. Any 240V spa must be hardwired through a GFCI disconnect by a licensed electrician. Extension cords and dryer-outlet adapters are dangerous and not code-compliant in Oregon.
Yes. The electrical circuit for a hot tub is permit-required work. Inside Bend city limits the permit goes through the City of Bend; outside city limits, through Deschutes County. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of every spa job — it also protects your homeowner's insurance if anything ever goes wrong.
A 50-amp spa circuit is one of the largest loads in a house. Many 200-amp panels handle it fine; older 100-amp panels — common in Bend's Westside, Awbrey Butte, and older Redmond and Sisters homes — often can't, especially if you also have an EV charger or heat pump. We run a load calculation first. If you need more capacity, a subpanel starts at $1,700 and a full 200-amp upgrade at $4,500.
The usual causes are a failing heater element, a pump motor with moisture in it, a worn GFCI breaker, or corroded connections in the disconnect. In Central Oregon winters a tripped GFCI is urgent because an unpowered spa can freeze and crack. We troubleshoot and repair spa circuits on service calls — same-day in most cases.
Yes — spas are a top amenity for Central Oregon short-term rentals and we install and service a lot of them. We work around booking calendars, coordinate with your spa dealer's delivery, and can add a timer or smart switch for the outdoor lighting while we're there.
